THE ESTATE AND THE TERRITORY

THE ESTATE
Tenuta Fernanda Cappello extends over 120 hectares of vineyards and produces about one million liters of wine per year, making it one of the largest private wineries in Friuli. In our lands, we cultivate all the typical grape varieties of Friuli as well as some Veneto vines, managing the entire production chain.

The limited production in quantitative terms - which does not require thinning interventions of the bunches - is due to the low fertility of the soils, an aspect that favors the ripening of the grapes and allows obtaining high dry extracts, an ideal condition for quality wines. The main witnesses of the goodness of our work are the recognitions obtained over the years and especially the trust of customers from all over the world who continue to regularly choose our wines.
QUALITY OF THE LAND
DEEP ROOTS,
WINES OF EXCELLENCE
At the foot of the Friulian Dolomites, protected by the calm and imposing Alps, lie the lands and the winery of Tenuta Fernanda Cappello. The territory, situated 250 meters above sea level, ennobles and characterizes its fruits thanks to two natural allies: the alpine breeze coming from Val Tramontina, which aerates the vineyards allowing the harvest of healthy grapes, and the stones which are precious for the mineral quality of the soil.

The alluvial terroir, made of calcareous-dolomitic stones, is capable of producing wines of excellent quality by imparting minerality to the wines first and foremost, but also because the stony expanse, at the foot of the plants during the day, reflects the heat and light necessary for the ripening of the grapes and at night returns the heat accumulated during the sunniest hours. Moreover, despite the significant rainfall, thanks to the extremely permeable soil and the favorable continuous ventilation of the alpine breeze coming from Val Tramontina, healthy grapes can be harvested.

The typical thermal excursions of the place, at the foot of the valley, also contribute to enhancing the intense aromas and fragrances, characteristic of the products of the territory. Places where Tenuta Fernanda Cappello is now an integral part: a bond that perpetuates and enriches itself harvest after harvest since the late 60s.
The stones of the Magredi
THE STONES THAT GUARD OUR VINEYARDS
The gravel deposits of the Cellina and Meduna give rise to a series of debris cones that, from the base of the mountains, spread towards the plain, appearing as a huge white spot in the center of the Pordenone territory. The alluvial deposits of these streams constitute the main framework of the high plain and the substrate on which the "Magredi del Meduna" develop. They take on the characteristics of an alpine foreland and, due to their original naturalistic content and environmental importance, have recently been included in the European list of “Sites of Community Importance,” recognized by the European Union. Certainly, the stones are the most characteristic element of our terroir from which derives the exceptional uniqueness of this environment, its particular microclimate, and consequently the plant landscape and the components of its fauna. It is the stones that enrich the fruits of this land with minerality, giving a significant perceptual stamp to the wines born in this area.
The Microclimate
THE PERFECT BALANCE OF NATURE WHERE CLIMATE SHAPES THE WINE
The climate of the territory is sub-continental, with an average annual temperature of about 13°C, with a range in January and July between 3°C and 24°C.
As for precipitation, the average annual rainfall is about 1,600 mm: the relative humidity remains throughout the year at values close to 70%. The climatic index (Huglin scale), a particularly interesting parameter to understand if an area is favorable for vine cultivation, is positioned at values similar to the wine regions of Languedoc and Bordeaux (F), Valpolicella and Trentino (I), highlighting significant peculiarities. The breeze descending from Val Tramontina helps maintain a ventilated climate all year round.
Awards
TESTIMONIES OF EXCELLENCE
For over ten years, most of our wines have been evaluated by Gambero Rosso with 2 glasses, always accompanied by a special mention for the exceptional quality-price ratio. The Veronelli Guide has awarded our Friulano 3 stars, the only wine not belonging to the highest price range to achieve such a result. Our commitment has also been rewarded by Luca Maroni, who placed one of our wines in third place overall in the national ranking. Important recognitions have also come from abroad: the Pinot Grigio received 90 points from both Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast. And again, in 2010, the magazine Merum elected our Sauvignon as the Best Wine of Friuli. And these are just some of the milestones that tell the quality and value of our work.
A MATTER OF ORIGIN
This is where our work is born: in respect of a complex nature, where each variety finds its ideal place to express itself at its best. Because in a great wine, the secret lies in the voice of the land. And we, that voice, know how to listen to it.
